Books Help Explain Tough Concepts

Parents sometimes have difficulty talking to their children about sensitive subjects. They may feel unprepared to begin a discussion or worry about what questions their children may ask. Luckily, there are many children’s books that introduce difficult topics and address the subject matter in an age appropriate manner. Child abuse books, stories about loss, drugs or alcoholism, tales of moving away or the loss of a pet can be great tools for parents. Children may read the stories on their own or along with mom or dad. Parents should ask the child how they felt about what they read and let the conversation grow from there.
